MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Storm Basyang (Penha) is set to trigger torrential rain in portions of Caraga and Northern Mindanao, the weather bureau warned the public shortly before noontime on Thursday, February 5.

Basyang was already 295 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, as of 10 am on Thursday. The tropical storm accelerated further, moving west at 25 kilometers per hour from 20 km/h.

Given its speed, it is now more likely to make its first landfall in Surigao del Sur on Thursday evening.

So far, Basyang has maintained its strength, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h and gustiness of up to 80 km/h.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) expects Basyang to cross other parts of Mindanao after its initial landfall, then emerge over the Bohol Sea on Friday morning, February 6.

Afterwards, the tropical cyclone could pass close to or make landfall again in Siquijor and Negros Oriental by Friday afternoon; emerge over the Sulu Sea by Friday evening or early Saturday morning, February 7; and cross the northern portion of Palawan between Saturday afternoon and evening.

In terms of intensity, Basyang could weaken into a tropical depression by Saturday and subsequently into a low pressure area by Monday, February 9.

PAGASA’s updated rainfall outlook, released at 11 am on Thursday, shows three provinces in Caraga and two provinces in Northern Mindanao likely to see intense to torrential rain from Basyang. Floods and landslides are expected.
