Key Insights

  • Scammers are asking ships to pay tolls in crypto to secure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • The scammers are capitalizing on the uncertainty surrounding the Iran war, and at least one ship might have fallen for the scam.
  • President Donald Trump has extended the US-Iran war ceasefire even as the US continues to blockade Iranian ports.

Ships trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz have become the latest target for crypto scammers. Reuters reported this, citing an alert from maritime risk management company MARISKS.

According to the report, scammers are impersonating Iranian authorities to demand crypto payments as tolls for passing through the strait. This builds on the Iranian regime’s proposal to charge commercial ships for passage through the critical waterway.

Bitcoin or USDT Demanded as Scammers Impersonate Iranian Authorities

In one of the fake messages MARISKS shared, scammers asked shipping companies to provide their documents. They actively framed it as an assessment request to trick recipients.

The message claimed that Iranian Security Services would assess the documents and confirm eligibility. It stated they would then pay the applicable fees in Bitcoin or USDT. It added that only those who pay would be able to pass through the strait unimpeded at the agreed time.

However, MARISKS claims that at least one ship might have fallen victim to the scam. The firm stated that Iranian forces shot at two ships while they tried to pass the strait on Saturday. It added that one of those ships was likely already paid to the scammers.

Interestingly, the scammers appear to be taking advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz blockade. Iranian authorities have alternated between blocking and opening the strait over the past few weeks.

The blockade of this critical waterway has left hundreds of ships stranded in the Middle East. This has also created desperation among shipping companies. With this, some are willing to pay the proposed tolls imposed by Iranian authorities despite their potential violation of US sanctions.

US-Iran War Ceasefire Continues Even as the US Maintains Blockade

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has extended the two-week ceasefire with Iran, which was set to expire. Trump stated in a Truth Social post that the extension was necessary to allow Iranian representatives to present a consensus proposal.

The extension means the US will further delay its planned attack on Iran. However, he insisted that the US military will continue to blockade Iran’s ports.

This action, which Iran claims is a violation of the ceasefire, has threatened to jeopardize the negotiations. However, the US said it has turned back 28 ships that tried to enter Iranian ports since its blockade began.

Despite news of the ceasefire extension, cryptocurrency prices dipped briefly. This likely stems from ongoing uncertainty about the war. Tensions grew after US Vice President J.D. Vance canceled a trip to Pakistan for negotiations.
