Eternity, starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller and Callum Turner, is new in theaters this week. What are Rotten Tomatoes critics saying about the supernatural romantic comedy?
Directed by David Freyne, Eternity opens in theaters nationwide on Wednesday. The official logline for the movie reads, “In an afterlife where souls have one week to decide where to spend eternity, Joan (Olsen) is faced with the impossible choice between the man she spent her life with (Teller) and her first love (Turner), who died young and has waited decades for her to arrive.”
Rated PG-13, Eternity also stars Da’Vine Joy Randolph, John Early, Danny Mac, Christie Burke, Lucy Turnbull, Barry Primus and Betty Buckley.
As of the publication of this article, Eternity has earned 80% “fresh” critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 65 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the movie reads, “Marrying a clever spin on the afterlife with an infectious sweet streak, Eternity is a spiritual successor to classic romantic screwball comedies that’s worthy of their company.”

What Are Individual Critics Saying About ‘Eternity’?
Richard Lawson of The Hollywood Reporter is among the top critics on RT who gives Eternity a “fresh” review, writing, “It’s all quite clever and sweet, even as a great current of sadness runs under just about every conversation in the film.”
Nick Schager of The Daily Beast is also a fan of the movie, writing in his RT review summary, “Snappy, sweet, and moving, this crowd-pleasing winner starring Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, and Callum Turner continues the genre’s much-needed revitalization.”
Lindsey Bahr of The Associated Press also praises Eternity on RT, writing in her review summary, “Is it romantic? Is it depressing? Is it woefully limited in its idea of what a human life amounts to? Yes? It’s committed, clever, comforting simplicity is also pretty satisfying — a contained, crowd-pleaser that does not go on for eternity.”
Robert Daniels of Screen International is among the top critics on RT who gives Eternity a “rotten” score, writing, “A high-concept romantic fantasy with a saccharine soul, David Freyne’s Eternity posits an afterlife that’s more like buying a permanent timeshare than heaven or hell.”
Owen Gleiberman of Variety isn’t a fan of Eternity, either, calling it in his “rotten” review summary on RT “a piece of afterlife world-building that amuses for a while and then runs out of gas.”
Eternity didn’t work for Marjorie Bamgarten of the Austin Chronicle, either, writing on RT that “Eternity bears a cute premise that becomes worn down through repetition.”
